Treatment for the Emerald Ash Borer

The Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive species native to Asia. This insect was first discovered in Ontario in 2002. It is believed that it crossed over the Canadian border at Windsor after establishing itself in the Detroit area. The borer is easily transported in infested firewood, wooden pallets and any other such Ash commodities. The infestation now has taken over much of Southern Ontario and has spread east to Renfrew County and Ottawa and as far North as Manitoulin Island. There is also likely more infestations that have yet to be found.

The Emerald Ash Borer feeds on all Ash species native to Ontario, including green, red, white, black and blue Ash.

What to Look for in an Infected Tree

  • foliage will wilt or turn yellow

  • adult borers will leave a "D" shaped exit hole 4mm to 5mm on the bark of infected trees

  • shallow meandering "S" shaped tunnels under the bark with abrupt turns

  • frass (refuse left behind by boring insects) or sawdust will be evident in tunnels

  • tunneling by larvae girdles the tree cutting off flow of food and water; branch mortality leads to whole tree mortality and eventually tree death

  • epicormic shoots (growing from a previously dormant bud) on branches and trunk

How to Save Your Ash Trees

Jonathan is a Certified Landscape Pesticide Exterminator.

To treat the Ash trees Jonathan will first assess whether or not the borer is present in the area and specifically your trees. Then with further observation he will carry out an examination on the trees in question to determine the severity of the infestation. Then decide if it is possible to keep the tree alive with a series of injections or if more serious action is needed. To preserve the Ash trees is our number one priority. Having mature trees on your property, not only increases your property value but provides much needed shade in the summer and are a wonderful resource to have in our communities and neighborhoods.
